Trout stocking scheduled

TPWD to stock 2,000 rainbow trout at Meridian State Park

MERIDIAN - Tomorrow will be a special day for visitors of Meridian State Park -- particularly for anglers of all ages -- as the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department fisheries will once again stock 2,000 rainbow trout in the state park’s lake at an undetermined time Thursday.

Families looking to spend a day or weekend exploring the Meridian State Park will be able to add rainbow trout fishing to their list of activities as TPWD continues stocking thousands of easy to catch, tasty rainbow trout in 185 ponds, lakes and rivers across the Lone Star state.

Park rangers encourage trout anglers to arrive early on stocking day, suggest maintaining a safe and courteous distance from fellow anglers, keeping an array of baits and lures nearby and having ice available when harvesting trout to keep fish fresh.

As one of more than 15 state parks throughout the state receiving stockings of rainbow trout this winter, Meridian State Park offers excellent fishing amenities such as fishing piers and shoreline access, cleaning stations, and equipment rentals for tackle and kayaks or canoes.

As a bonus, state parks are the only locations in Texas that anglers can fish for free without a fishing license with a statewide bag limit of five trout. Because rainbow trout are unable to survive in Texas after the winter, anglers are encouraged to keep up to their daily bag limit of five trout.
