Bosque Arts Center introduces Big Game Casino Night April 9 to kick off annual Big Event fundraising weekend in support of the arts

CLIFTON – Think Vegas, baby! Think sparkle, think lucky ladies, think dice, cards and roulette, think professional croupiers in uniform, think rows of slot machines, think endless entertainment.

Now, think just right around the corner. That’s right, no flying to Vegas or Reno, just a short drive to the Bosque Arts Center. Upping the stakes from its popular BINGO evenings, the BAC will have everything you need to come and play the games you enjoy at your favorite casino. The Big Game Casino Night gambling games roll out at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 9, as a part of the BAC Big Event fundraising weekend.

With this special night of “gaming,” the BAC hopes to hit the jackpot in an effort to raise financial support for all of its ongoing activities – and in the process, keep the arts alive in Bosque County. For the price of $50 admission, guests receive $1,000 worth of "funny funds" to be cashed in at the tables for gambling chips, and it will be a BYOB event.

With authentic looking tables and trained dealers provided by Elite Casino Events out of Fort Worth, winnings can be traded in for raffle tickets on numerous prizes at the end of the evening. Early on, if you lose all of your chips, no problem, additional chips can be purchased from the BAC banker to continue playing.

The Bosque Arts Center in Clifton, is located just off of Hwy 219, at 215 S. College Hill Drive. $50 reservations for this evening of fun and entertainment may be purchased online at www.bosqueartscenter.org or by calling the BAC at 254-675-3724.

For the uninitiated and novices, here follows the Casino Games 101 of the selection of games of chance which will be available that night:

Texas hold 'em: One of the most popular variations of the card game poker. Two cards, known as hole cards, are dealt face down to each player, and then five community cards are dealt face up in three stages. The stages consist of a series of three cards turned: "the flop," later an additional single card "the turn" and a final card, "the river." Each player seeks the best five-card poker hand from any combination of the seven cards of the five community cards and their two hole cards. The player who has the best hand and has not folded wins the pot.

Roulette: Meaning “little wheel” in French, this casino game offers players the opportunity to place bets on any variety of either a single number or groups of numbers, colors and odd or even numbers The winning number is determined after the croupier spins a wheel in one direction, then spins a ball in the opposite direction.  Once the ball comes to a rest in the track and falls into a wheel slot, winnings are paid to anyone placing a successful bet.

Craps: A dice game known provide a betting opportunity to players and determines winners by the outcome of a dice roll or a series of rolls. At the table players may wager their chips against each other or the bank. At times craps can be difficult to follow as the table is made up of many options and experienced players have their own special terminology for their actions and their wagers, but the beginner is just as likely to win as the expert.

Blackjack: Also known as Twenty-One, a comparison card game between one or more players and the table’s dealer. Each player in turn competes against the dealer. Players do not compete against each other. It is played with one or more decks of 52 cards, and is the most popular casino game around. Cards play at face value from 2 to 10 while Jacks, Queens, and Kings are all valued at 10. The Ace can be used as either one or 11. The object is to get either a two-card count of 21 for “Blackjack,” multiple cards adding up to 21, or as close to 21 without going over or being defeated by the dealer’s hand.

Slot machines: Known by many different names depending upon what country you’re playing in – the Brits know them as a fruit machine, the Scots refer to them as a puggy, and they are called the slots in Canada and America. This game of chance is a casino gambling machine also known as a one-armed bandits in the early days due to the large mechanical levers affixed to the machine’s side. The basic layout is a screen displaying three or more reels that spin when the lever or the betting button are depressed. Based on matching the appropriate fruits, gems or a specific theme, determines what if any money is won and how much.

Dress up for the occasion, act as if you’re in Monaco – for the ladies, wear your pearls and furs; for the gentlemen, look dashing in your tux.

As with any hobby, sport or activity, gambling has its own set of jargon and slang that gamblers may use casually in conversation. And there are lots of terms and phrases that exist to describe the behavior of gamblers.

Will Lady Luck be at your side that night and will you be a high-roller? Will you succumb to that gambler’s “just one more throw or card” and lose everything in a “double or nothing” game. Will your poker face hold out when you have that exceptional hand? Will your winning streak turn cold? Or will you be the novice with the seemingly endless beginner’s luck?

But since it’s all for the good cause, gambling responsibly means losing to the BAC house, and funding the unique cultural center in Bosque County.
